Contexte
These sources analyze a paradigm shift in modern warfare characterized by the drone revolution, where massive quantities of low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles have created a lethal, high-speed “kill chain.” Russia has exploited this trend by deploying thousands of Shahed drones to saturate Ukrainian defenses, using an attritional logic where cheap munitions force the expenditure of million-dollar interceptor missiles. To counter these threats, Europe is developing the European Sky Shield Initiative, which aims to integrate space-based early warning systems and layered air defenses against both drone swarms and hypersonic missiles. Meanwhile, Ukrainian companies are producing innovative, affordable interceptor drones like the “Sting,” though current regulations prioritize domestic defense over lucrative export requests from the Middle East. Experts emphasize that the future of defense requires a transition toward high-scale manufacturing, risk-based regulatory frameworks, and collaborative electronic warfare strategies to regain the favorable side of the cost-exchange curve.
